The arm's length test

There is a moment most people over forty recognise. You pick up a menu in a dimly lit restaurant, and without thinking, you hold it further away. Then further again. Eventually you hand it to someone else.
That is presbyopia. It is not a disease, not a sign of neglect, and not something you brought on by reading in poor light. It is a structural change in the lens of the eye that happens to every human being who lives long enough.
What is physically happening

Inside your eye, behind the iris, sits the crystalline lens. To focus on something close, a ring of muscle around it contracts and allows the lens to become more curved. This is called accommodation.
The lens continues adding layers throughout life and gradually becomes stiffer. As it stiffens, it becomes less able to change shape when the muscle contracts. The muscle is working fine. The lens simply will not flex the way it used to.
This process starts far earlier than most people expect, from childhood, but it only becomes noticeable when the remaining flexibility drops below what ordinary reading distance requires. For most people that crossing point falls in the early to mid forties.
How common it is in India

Presbyopia affects essentially everyone eventually, but the proportion of people whose presbyopia goes uncorrected varies enormously by access to eye care.
A systematic review of Indian studies placed uncorrected presbyopia prevalence at roughly a third of the affected population. That is a striking figure, because the correction is simple and the impact of going without is not trivial: reduced reading, difficulty with close work, and measurable effects on livelihood for people whose work depends on near vision.
There is also evidence that presbyopia presents earlier in India than in temperate regions, with onset commonly in the late thirties rather than mid forties. Higher ambient temperature and ultraviolet exposure are among the explanations proposed, though this is not fully settled.
Presbyopia is not long sight

These two get confused constantly, partly because both make near vision difficult and both are corrected with plus-powered lenses.

You can have both. Someone long sighted from childhood typically notices presbyopia earlier, because they were already using some of their focusing reserve to see clearly at distance.
The correction options

Reading glasses. Simple plus-powered lenses for near work only. They are the most straightforward answer if your distance vision is otherwise fine, though you must take them off or look over them to see across the room.
Bifocals. Two distinct zones in one lens, distance above and near below, separated by a visible line. Effective and inexpensive to make, though the abrupt jump between zones takes adjustment.
Progressive lenses. A gradual change in power from top to bottom with no visible line and an intermediate zone for screens. The most versatile option, covered in detail in our guide to progressive versus bifocal lenses.
Prescription sunglasses. Presbyopia does not pause outdoors. If you read outside, or need to see a phone screen in daylight, near correction in a tinted lens solves a problem that most people simply put up with.
What does not help

Eye exercises will not restore lens flexibility. The change is structural, in the protein composition of the lens itself, and no amount of focusing practice reverses it.
Delaying correction does not preserve your vision. There is no evidence that struggling without glasses slows presbyopia, and the practical cost is real: headaches, eye strain and avoided reading.
Buying stronger readers than you need is counterproductive. Too much plus power shortens your working distance uncomfortably and can cause strain of its own.
