The problem all three are solving

A lens has one power at any given point. If you need one correction for distance and a different one for reading, a single power cannot serve both. Everything that follows is an answer to that problem.
For people under about forty, this usually does not arise. The eye's own focusing system handles the near end, so one power for distance is enough. After presbyopia sets in, that internal adjustment fades and the lens has to do the work instead.
Single vision

One power across the whole lens. It is the simplest design, the easiest to make accurately, and the cheapest to replace.
Optically it is also the best performing, because there are no compromises built into the periphery. If you only need correction at one distance, nothing beats it.
Many people over forty end up with two pairs of single vision lenses rather than one multifocal pair: one for distance, one for reading. That is a perfectly reasonable choice, and for people who read in long sittings it is often the more comfortable one.
Bifocals

Two zones in one lens. Distance across the main area, a reading segment set into the lower portion, with a visible line between them.
The strengths are practical. The reading zone is wide, the power is consistent across it, and the boundary is easy to learn because you can see exactly where it is. There is no distorted peripheral region to navigate around.
The weaknesses are the visible line, which some people dislike, and the missing middle. A bifocal gives you far and near but nothing designed for the intermediate distance where a computer screen sits. For anyone working at a desk, that gap is felt daily.
Progressive lenses

Power changes gradually from top to bottom, with no line. Distance at the top, an intermediate corridor through the middle, reading at the bottom.
The intermediate zone is the real advantage. It covers screens, dashboards, music stands and shelves, which is the range bifocals leave out entirely.
The cost of that smooth transition is peripheral distortion. Achieving a gradual power change without a line means the sides of the lens carry optical compromise, felt as soft or swimming vision when you look sideways rather than turning your head.

The adjustment period is real

Most people adapt to progressives within one to two weeks, and it is worth knowing what that fortnight actually feels like so it does not come as a shock.
The common experiences are a sense that the floor curves slightly when you look down, blurring at the edges of vision when you glance sideways, and initial hesitation on stairs. All of these come from the peripheral zones and all of them fade as you learn to point your nose at what you want to see instead of moving your eyes.
Two habits shorten the adjustment considerably. Wear them full time rather than switching back to old glasses, because alternating restarts the adaptation. And move your head rather than your eyes for the first week, particularly on stairs.
Which one suits you

Choose single vision if you need correction at only one distance, if you spend long unbroken sessions at a single working distance, or if you want the sharpest possible optics and do not mind carrying two pairs.
Choose bifocals if you want a wide, stable reading zone, are not bothered by the line, and do not spend significant time at intermediate distance.
Choose progressives if your day moves constantly between distances, if screen work matters, or if the visible line is something you would rather avoid.
Frame choice affects progressives more than the other two. The corridor needs vertical space, so very shallow frames restrict the usable reading area. If you are moving to progressives, check frame depth before falling for a shape.
