Eyelid skin is the thinnest on the human body, a fraction of the thickness of skin on the cheek or forearm. It has very little subcutaneous fat, few oil glands, and a thin protective outer layer.
That thinness exists for a functional reason. The eyelid has to fold completely out of the way thousands of times a day, and it cannot do that if it is thick. The cost of that mobility is reduced protection.
Combine thin skin with a location that faces upward and outward, exposed during every daylight hour, and you have an area receiving a disproportionate share of lifetime ultraviolet exposure with the least defence against it.
Why it is the area people miss

Ask most people where they apply sun protection and the honest answer rarely includes the eyelids. There are practical reasons for this.
Sunscreen near the eye stings when it migrates, particularly once you sweat, so people instinctively stop short of the lid margin. Many formulations explicitly advise avoiding the eye area. And the eyelid crease and inner corner are awkward to cover evenly.
The result is a consistent gap in coverage in exactly the area that can least afford it. Studies of sunscreen application have repeatedly found the eyelid region among the most frequently missed.
What the exposure does

Cumulative ultraviolet exposure affects this area in several ways, and they range from cosmetic to clinical.
The cosmetic effects are the ones people notice first. Ultraviolet degrades collagen and elastin, and in thin skin with little structural reserve the effects show earlier than elsewhere. This is a large part of why fine lines appear around the eyes before other areas, alongside the mechanical effect of squinting.
The clinical concern is skin cancer. The eyelid and periocular region is a recognised site for skin cancers, with basal cell carcinoma the most common type there. The lower lid and inner corner are the more frequently affected areas, consistent with a pattern driven by sun exposure.
Because the tissue is thin and sits close to important structures, treatment in this region is more complex than on skin elsewhere, which is a further argument for prevention rather than management.
Where sunglasses do more than protect your eyes

Most discussion of sunglasses concerns the eye itself. For the surrounding skin, the lens matters less than the physical coverage of the frame.
A larger lens shades more of the periocular skin. A frame that sits closer to the face reduces the ultraviolet arriving from the sides. And a frame with some wrap addresses the angle that flat frames leave entirely open, which is the one that matters most when the sun is low.

What a sensible routine looks like

Use eyewear as the primary protection for the eyelid area rather than trying to solve it with sunscreen alone. Frame coverage does not sting, does not need reapplying, and does not migrate.
Choose coverage deliberately. If you spend long periods outdoors, a larger or closer-fitting frame is doing meaningful work beyond the lens.
